Congratulations, Mr. Thomas Smith, Haven's next principal!

Dear Haven Community -

I hope your summer is off to a joyful start! It is with great pleasure that I announce Thomas Smith as the next principal of Haven Middle School! Mr. Smith currently serves as assistant principal and has been an integral member of the Haven leadership team for the past five years. His appointment was approved by the School Board at last night’s meeting and he will officially begin in his new role as of July 1.

We are grateful for the staff and families who gave their feedback as part of our community survey and for those who served on the interview panel. Throughout the process, we heard the importance of selecting a leader who is highly visible; empowers staff, students and families; and prioritizes growth for all students.

Mr. Smith’s leadership has been grounded in teamwork, visibility, clear communication, and creating a school community where students and staff genuinely enjoy being together each day. He believes middle school has a profound impact on a student’s confidence, learning, identity, and voice; this has shaped his emphasis on building authentic relationships with staff, students, and families.

Mr. Smith’s 16 years in education have been spent in a variety of roles, including as an assistant principal, dean of instruction, department chair, instructional coach, and science and math teacher. His vision for Haven is rooted in creating a student-centered environment where academic growth, belonging, restorative practices, and strong relationships remain at the heart. As principal, he is committed to building on Haven's many strengths while continuing to foster a culture of belonging, academic growth, and joyful learning.

Mr. Smith is a new Evanstonian who is originally from New York. Outside of school, he is a proud dad to an energetic two-year-old, a lifelong New York sports fan, and someone who enjoys spending time outdoors and with family. The best way to reach him is via email (smitht2@district65.net).

The search process will soon begin for Haven’s assistant principal with a desire to name a new leader prior to the start of the school year. The district team looks forward to supporting the Haven administration and staff in ensuring a strong and joyful start to the new school year. More information will be forthcoming!

Warmly,

Dr. Angel Turner
Superintendent
